Carbontriding

Carbontriding

Process

oil_quench_furnace_03
Carbonitriding is a case hardening process in which carbon and nitrogen (introduced by carbon rich gas and ammonia to furnace atmosphere) is absorbed at the surface of a steel component to produce upon quenching a hardened surface layer to a required depth.

Component suitability

  • Shafts
  • Levers

Advantages of Gas Carburising

  • Produces a hard wearing surface for lower alloyed steels such as mild steel than that could not be achieved with gas carburising alone.

Typical materials

S1214, 1020, Mild steel

Gas Carburising Furnace types available

Sealed quenched furnaces, rotary retort furnaces.

Possible limitations

Distortion of component could be expected and a grinding allowance may be necessary.
